Internship Experiences
Chicago Fire Soccer Club
In the Summer of 2012 I interned with the Chicago Fire Soccer Club in Bridgeview, Illinois. This internship allowed me to view the business world in sports first-hand and I was able to see why I would be successful in a full-time job with a sports company. I worked in the Fan Experience department and worked solely on trying to make a world-class experience and focus on the fan's time at the games. I also learned the six steps to selling and believe this will catapult me and give me an advantage in any entry-level sales job. Part of the internship included creating a learning plan for myself. I have also attached my portfolio I completed for completion of the internship for academic credits. The type of situations I was able to learn that active learning was not able to give me is just actually being in the business and seeing how a sports team deals in relationships with the owners of the facility and its third party vendors. In classes we are always taught how the fan and consumer are who we need to please the most, but actually having to deal with fans daily with the Fire applied those methods and gave me concrete learning.
Loras Sports Information Office
Throughout my internship with the Sports Information Office I had been privileged to have the resources of all the elements that bring athletics on a college campus to life. A couple specific things I learned at the beginning of my internship was the act of integrity and dependability. My job requires being honest and ethical since I am open to see many documents that consist of information regarding student-athletes and athletic programs around the campus. There have been some situations where I must be ethical in the way I go about having such information in my hand and respect the subject matter and keep it confined to the description of my job and not relaying it outside of the job. My Job requires being reliable, responsible, and dependable, and fulfilling obligations, also known as dependability. Being an intern I have to be able to accept any duty that is asked upon me and be open to new things that I have not done in the past. This has been asked upon me from the beginning of the internship as I have assisted in making programs, doing statistics, scoreboard operator, and taking pictures of athletic play, just a few things that I have never done prior. Early in my internship and I now know that along with dependability and integrity, there will be many other attributes that I will learn as I complete this internship. Attached is the learning plan that was created for the internship. With dealing with the collegiate office it was interesting to see how schools have to comply with their own mission as well with the conference that they are in because they also represent that conference along with the other schools.
The Lorian
Student Newspaper
Being able to write for the campus newspaper has been an opportunity that forever will be cherished when I look back at my time at school. The experience it gave me to hone my writing skills was very beneficial and when I was asked to become the Sports Editor of the newspaper it was something that I accepted, happily. I added the title of managing editor during my senior year because I had the most experience among the whole staff and a way of knowing how things operated within the system. Heading a staff of writers gave me skills that I never knew I would receive out of the job such as managing a group of five writers each week and giving them assignments around campus to cover, making sure I was available to them in any capacity that would allow their assignment to be easier to cover was also another concept that I truly enjoyed because what was published in the newspaper that week reflected the hard work of me and many others. The Lorian gave me an outlet to write creatively and help manage a newspaper as well as a staff. The Lorian was able to give me responsibility of managing a staff and I believe it helps me as a pursue a career with that experience.
