Albert Einstein, 1921 -
"It is not so very important for a person to learn facts. For that he does not really need a college. He can learn them from books. The value of an education in a liberal arts college is not the learning of many facts but the training of the mind to think something that cannot be learned from textbooks."

Einstein is explaining what it means to have a liberal arts education and how many believe it is just the plain facts of certain subjects. Instead, we are aware that a liberal arts education gives us the basis to become well-rounded thinkers due to all the variety of subjects we take in. When we do focus on certain subjects the books are there for the facts, but it is how we apply what we learn from those books with the experiences we are able to gain from outside sources. That is what I try to explain through active learning and reflective thinking when talking about the experiences and internships I have been apart of as well as the advanced education course I have had an opportunity to take.

The advantages of a Liberal Arts education
Having a liberal arts education has benefited me when I think about my future goals in many ways that are explained in the readings. I believe this education has taught me to think and view things in different perspectives to get a more round observation and opinion on matters at hand. I believe this education has given me great knowledge touching on many of the key subjects that make a more complete person when it comes to knowledge and skills. Thinking about how it plays into my future goals as a student of Sport Management I will need to talk to many people in person and over the phone so being taught how to properly communicate is what I can take away from this education the most. Aside from that, thinking critically and completely will help me give proper judgments and realistic assessments when the opportunity is asked of me.
I can highlight my liberal arts education in my portfolio through my work with The Lorian newspaper on campus and well as my internships I have had throughout my school career with the Dubuque Fighting Saints, Loras College Sports Information, and the Chicago Fire Soccer Club. All these experiences stem from my growth in liberal arts through learning how to write, communicate, and solve problems. Also through all these experiences I can look at myself and self-assess or take any critiques I have been given and learn how to improve myself to make myself better. I believe the best audience for my portfolio based on my goals is any perspective employers looking to build a background on me. I think a portfolio like mine can be the decisive factor over another candidate because it can be much more informing then a resume due to the expanded amount of abilities one can utilize. The best highlights and artifacts for this audience can range from articles I have written for the Lorian to artifacts gathered in prior internships that I have done for credit through my major.
